First Diagnostic Facility Construction Begins in Tororo

Construction has commenced on Tororo District’s first dedicated diagnostic facility, a development expected to alleviate significant challenges faced by patients in accessing crucial medical services.
The Shs1.9 billion project, a collaboration between Joint Medical Stores and the Tororo Archdiocese, is situated at St. Anthony Hospital. Archbishop Dr. Emmanuel Obbo officiated the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasizing the critical need for specialized diagnostic capabilities within the district.
The facility is designed to offer a comprehensive suite of services, including expanded laboratory testing, digital imaging such as X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs, as well as fluoroscopy, endoscopy, and pathology services. Integrated outpatient diagnostic clinics will also be part of the offering.
Archbishop Obbo highlighted personal experiences where the lack of diagnostic facilities contributed to preventable loss of life. He urged future staff to serve with integrity and a focus on healing.
The Chief Executive Officer of St. Anthony Hospital, Dr. Anthony Okoth, stated that the new center will significantly improve service delivery, reduce patient waiting times, and streamline the diagnostic process, thereby decreasing the need for patients to travel for specialized tests.
Dr. Daniel Mark Lutalo of Joint Medical Stores indicated that the construction is projected to take six months to complete. The facility is envisioned not only to serve Tororo but also to act as a model for enhancing diagnostic capacity across the broader Eastern region and even parts of western Kenya.
