First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga has laid out a significant government plan designed to propel the Busoga Sub-region towards economic prosperity. The strategy focuses on key areas including industrialization, infrastructure development, and enhancing tourism.
Kadaga announced that land has been secured for industrial parks in the Sigulu Islands and Iganga District. Additionally, the Namasagali Industrial Park is expected to become operational soon. These projects are slated for immediate implementation following the formation of the new government.
On the infrastructure front, the Kimaka Airport is nearing completion and is anticipated to serve as an international gateway for Jinja and the broader Busoga region once commissioned. The completion of the Saka Bridge road, connecting Jinja, Kaliro, Pallisa, and Kamuli districts, is also expected to improve transportation and trade.
Furthermore, municipalities within Busoga will receive additional funding through the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program to enhance urban facilities and services. Kadaga also highlighted the growing tourism potential of the region, noting increased visibility after a recent exhibition in Mombasa.
Busoga Kingdom’s Minister for Tourism, Hellen Namutamba, added that efforts are underway to attract investors for industries like fish processing in the Sigulu Islands, aiming to create jobs and reduce poverty. Investments in tourism infrastructure, including sites like Kagulu Rock and the Source of the Nile, are also noted, with visitor numbers reportedly up by over 45 percent, boosting national tourism revenue.
