Mr. Walter Uryek-Wun, principal hospital administrator at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, has been elected as the new president of the Uganda National Association of Hospital Administrators (UNAHA). He will serve a three-year term, taking over from Mr. Peter Okello Odeke.

During the association’s Annual General Meeting held in Lira, Mr. Uryek-Wun unveiled his agenda, which prioritizes enhancing the capabilities of hospital administrators across Uganda. He highlighted the need for professional development to keep pace with the evolving healthcare landscape and technological advancements.

A key objective for the new administration is to foster stronger collaboration with the Ministry of Health. “We seem to be a little detached, and I want, during the term of office, we strongly and deeply collaborate with the Ministry of Health,” stated Mr. Uryek-Wun. He expressed a desire to establish a dedicated presence or desk within the ministry to facilitate this partnership.

The leadership also stressed the importance of “accountable leadership,” urging administrators to ensure transparency and demonstrate value for money in managing all resources, including finances, human capital, and time.

Plans are also in motion to encourage greater administrative involvement in government health programs, shifting from a perceived detachment to a proactive role in national health initiatives. To support members financially, UNAHA intends to establish a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO).

Furthermore, the association aims to bridge any gaps between administrative staff and clinical leaders, promoting teamwork and consultation to ensure hospital administrators are recognized as vital to daily facility operations.
