Authorities in Butaleja District are probing the tragic death of a 21-year-old Senior Three student, Opendi Donato, who was found deceased in Busaba Sub-county. The student, also known as Junior and a resident of Nagondo B Village, was discovered hanging from a tree early in the morning.

The discovery was reported by the LC1 Chairperson, Muduwu Peter, after a resident en route to their garden found the body. Police were immediately notified and responded to the scene.

Investigators from the Butaleja Police Station, accompanied by Scene of Crime Officers and homicide detectives, documented the location. Among the items recovered were a rope, a note believed to be a suicide note, and the deceased’s PLE results slip. Statements were recorded from individuals connected to the case.

The body has been transported to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination. Police are urging the public to seek help and guidance when facing difficulties, rather than resorting to suicide. They also extended their condolences to the grieving family.

According to the 2024 Annual Crime Report, suicide cases in Uganda are often linked to a combination of mental health issues, trauma, and severe stress. In the Bukedi South Region, which includes Butaleja, police recorded 10 suicide cases in 2024, an increase from seven cases in 2025.
