The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) recently passed out 106 soldiers specializing in light artillery systems at the 3rd Division Headquarters in Moroto District. The graduates, part of the 106 Artillery Brigade, completed a rigorous course focused on modern light artillery equipment.
During the ceremony, Maj. Gen. Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, stressed the critical importance of discipline, vigilance, and the proper maintenance of military equipment. He urged the new artillery personnel to prioritize national security and the protection of citizens and their property, emphasizing that patriotism and conviction, rather than financial incentives, should drive their service.
Col. Joseph Patrick Ocen, Commander of the 106 Artillery Brigade, stated that this training is the first phase of a larger modernization strategy for the brigade, with plans to introduce training on various weapon calibres.
The graduation ceremony, which included a field exercise dubbed “Last Fire,” also recognized top-performing trainees for their excellence. The event was attended by senior UPDF leadership and officers from various artillery and air defence training institutions.
