Uganda faces a persistent crisis in maternal healthcare, with an estimated 15 to 17 women losing their lives each day from complications during pregnancy and childbirth. These deaths are largely preventable, pointing to systemic issues within the nation’s health infrastructure.
The high mortality rate underscores the critical need for improved access to quality antenatal care, skilled birth attendants, and emergency obstetric services, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Factors contributing to this tragedy include delayed access to emergency care, lack of essential medical supplies, and insufficient trained health personnel.
Addressing this crisis requires a multi-faceted approach, including strengthening healthcare facilities, training more healthcare workers, and implementing effective health education programs to empower women and communities. Urgent action is needed to reverse this devastating trend and ensure the safety of mothers during childbirth.
