Sarah Nakitto, a midwife who has spent nearly a decade assisting mothers and newborns at Kyenjonjo General Hospital, is now in desperate need of life-saving medical intervention. Nakitto is suffering from end-stage kidney failure and requires a kidney transplant to survive.

Her health struggles began with high blood pressure during her pregnancies, which eventually led to irreversible kidney damage. Since her diagnosis in September 2025, she has been undergoing dialysis twice a week, a costly and taxing treatment that drains her resources and impacts her daily life. Despite temporary relief, she experiences significant discomfort and swelling between sessions.

Doctors have determined that a kidney transplant is her only path to long-term recovery. Fortunately, her sister, Racheal Naggayi, has been medically confirmed as a compatible kidney donor.

However, the estimated cost for the transplant surgery and subsequent care at Apollo Hospital in India stands at Shs100 million. Nakitto and her family are unable to meet this substantial financial burden and are appealing for public, governmental, and institutional support. “I want to live and continue serving mothers and newborns,” Nakitto stated in her appeal, emphasizing her sister’s willingness to donate a kidney provided the funds can be raised.

Nakitto’s situation underscores the critical need for accessible and affordable specialized healthcare in Uganda. She remains hopeful that with the generosity of well-wishers, she can receive the transplant and return to her calling.
