During the ongoing murder trial of businesswoman Molly Katanga, the State has leveled a serious accusation: that she withdrew over Shs40 billion from her late husband Henry Katanga’s Euro account after his death.
Chief State Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya presented this claim during Katanga’s cross-examination at the High Court in Kampala. The prosecution is using this to challenge the defense’s narrative that Henry Katanga was depressed due to financial difficulties. The State argues that the businessman possessed substantial assets, including billions in savings and investments across various banks and SACCOs.
Muwaganya informed the court that the Euro account held approximately Shs40 billion (8,863,313 Euros) at the time of Henry Katanga’s death in November 2023. He questioned Molly Katanga about withdrawing these funds to zero, to which she responded that she did not recall and had been transacting to pay suppliers. She admitted to being the sole operator of the account and continued making withdrawals even while incarcerated at Luzira Prison, citing a “special arrangement” with the bank.
The prosecution also presented evidence of Henry Katanga’s significant financial holdings, including Shs1.5 billion in UAP bank, Shs2.6 billion in ICEA accounts, Shs1 billion in UCCS Community SACCO, and Shs400 million in a Baroda Bank account, alongside billions in securities and bonds. This is intended to refute claims of his alleged depression over debt.
Further accusations surfaced regarding Molly Katanga’s alleged fabrication of medical documents for her bail application and her involvement with Merge Uganda Limited, a company allegedly dealing in classified government supplies, including firearms. She denied these claims, stating she has never been trained in or used a gun.
Molly Katanga, who denies killing her husband, asserted that investigators did not give her a full opportunity to explain her side before she was charged. The trial continues with further re-examination by the defense.
