Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease are on the rise in Uganda, leading to a significant number of fatalities. A primary factor behind this alarming increase is the sedentary lifestyle adopted by many Ugandans.

Physical activity is crucial for burning excess fat, the accumulation of which can be detrimental to health. However, many individuals opt for vehicles even for short distances and spend most of their time seated, negatively impacting their well-being. Activities like cycling, highly beneficial for health, are practiced by a limited number of people in Kampala, a city with a population of four million.

Schools are also contributing to the problem by neglecting co-curricular activities like sports in favor of academics, which can lead to issues like obesity among students. Furthermore, urban road design often discourages physical activity. The lack of pedestrian pavements forces people to share narrow roads with vehicles, making walking unsafe and pushing individuals towards using cars or motorcycles.

Road infrastructure also neglects cyclists, with no dedicated lanes, putting them at risk from motorists and boda boda operators. The source urges the government to address these issues by ensuring pavements, penalizing those who obstruct them, and building dedicated cycling lanes to promote this mode of transport. Additionally, schools should be mandated to reinstate sports and extracurricular activities.

Ultimately, individuals must take personal responsibility for their health through proper diet and regular exercise. Simple exercises like push-ups and squats can be done at home or work, requiring minimal space. Adopting a basic exercise routine can significantly improve health and help avoid the high costs associated with chronic diseases.
