When Allan Okello made the move to Tanzania’s Young Africans SC (Yanga) in January, it came with considerable pressure and numerous questions about his ability to adapt. However, four months later, the Ugandan has not only found his footing but has become a standout performer and a fan favorite, playing a crucial role in Yanga’s pursuit of the Tanzanian Premier League title.

Okello’s transition was marked by a quiet determination, understanding the high expectations at one of East Africa’s biggest clubs. He acknowledged the quality within the squad and the need to earn his place through hard work. This pragmatic approach has paid dividends.

His impact on the pitch has been substantial. In 20 appearances across all competitions, Okello has recorded five goals and seven assists. Yanga currently leads the league table by five points with eight matches remaining, boasting an impressive offensive record.

Beyond the statistics, Okello’s style of play has endeared him to the Tanzanian supporters. His composure under pressure, deft left foot that dictates the tempo of games, and confidence to execute difficult passes in tight spaces have drawn comparisons to his earlier performances in Uganda with KCCA and Vipers SC.

Recent performances have further cemented his status. A brace and an assist in a 3-0 victory against Coastal Union earned him widespread praise, with “The Citizen” newspaper dubbing him “the heartbeat of Yanga’s attacking play.” Other Tanzanian media outlets have lauded his decisive goals and composure, referring to him as a “dangerous weapon.”

This acceptance is significant, especially considering Okello moved from Vipers, where he was a central figure, to a Yanga squad rich with established talent and continental ambitions. He has managed this transition impressively, displaying a calmer and more collective approach to his game.

The positive performances also bode well for the Uganda Cranes ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Okello, who has adapted remarkably well to the demanding environment at Yanga, now looks like a player who has truly found his home at the club.
