Mike Wine: Lack of Gratitude Deters Veteran Musicians from Mentoring New Talent

Singer Michael Mugisha, popularly known as Mike Wine, has shared his perspective on why Uganda’s established musicians are hesitant to invest in and mentor new artists.

Historically, prominent figures like Jose Chameleone, Bobi Wine, and Bebe Cool have been instrumental in nurturing upcoming talents, many of whom have gone on to achieve significant success. Chameleone supported artists like Radio and Weasel, King Saha, and Pallaso, Bobi Wine mentored talents such as Eddy Kenzo and Zex Bilangilangi, and Bebe Cool played a part in Rema Namakula’s early career.

However, Mike Wine observes a significant shift, stating that this tradition of mentorship has waned. He attributes this trend to experiences where certain artists, after receiving support and achieving stardom, have failed to show gratitude or acknowledge their benefactors.

“Artistes have lost trust in uplifting young musicians. Many people are unappreciative after making it big. They don’t look back at what was done for them, and that has made many senior artistes lose interest in helping others,” Mike Wine explained.

He emphasized the importance of gratitude and loyalty in sustaining mentorship relationships within the music industry. The absence of these qualities, he believes, has disheartened many established artists from taking risks on promising new entrants.
