As Christians embark on their annual pilgrimage to the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, security agencies are emphasizing the importance of vigilance to ward off potential criminal activity.
Authorities are requesting religious leaders to meticulously vet individuals joining the pilgrimage and to share compiled lists with security teams. This measure aims to identify and intercept individuals who might pose as pilgrims with the intent to commit crimes along the arduous journey.
Mr. Zadok Kamusiime, the Resident District Commissioner for Rukiga, highlighted this concern while addressing Christians at the Diocese of Kigezi Cathedral. He stressed the need for group leaders to ensure that only vetted individuals are permitted to join the pilgrimage en route.
Last year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations saw the arrest of 96 individuals suspected of various offenses, including theft, fraud, and attempted rape. Police reports indicated that some suspects blended with the crowds at the shrines to facilitate their criminal acts.
In response, the Pastoral Coordinator for Kabale Diocese, Fr. Fidel Ndagijimana, confirmed that pilgrim lists will be shared with the police. He also stated that pilgrims walking on foot will be accompanied by security personnel throughout their journey to ensure their safety.
