The USSSA Boys Football Championship in Lira has seen six teams punch their tickets to the Round of 32 after impressive performances on Tuesday. Defending champions Buddo SS, Kyaddondo, dark horses Ssingo, Mukono Kings, Amus College, and Bukedea Comprehensive South all secured back-to-back victories, guaranteeing them a spot in the next stage with games to spare.
Buddo SS sent a strong message with a dominant 3-0 victory over Masindi SS. Goals from Ambrose Aboyi, Rahim Kato, and Umar Katumba sealed the win, with Masindi’s coach admitting the pressure of facing the champions affected his team.
In a surprising turn, last year’s semifinalists Jinja Progressive Academy (Jipra) are on the verge of elimination after a 0-2 loss to a well-organized Kyaddondo side. Jipra will need a win in their final group game and favorable results elsewhere to advance.
Mukono Kings continued their unexpected strong run, securing a 1-0 win against Trinity College Abilomino. This victory, coupled with their previous win, confirms their progression and sets up a decisive clash for top spot against Amus College, who also qualified with a 1-0 victory over Standard High Ndejje.
Elsewhere, Ssingo SS defeated Mengo SS 2-0, and Bukedea South claimed a 2-0 win against Lira Town College to seal their qualification spots.
The championship, however, wasn’t without controversy, as a 1-1 draw between Mehta and Kawempe Muslim was marred by chaotic scenes, including two red cards for Mehta, one of which involved a coach. This incident could impact Mehta’s qualification hopes.
