Two fishermen have tragically lost their lives on Lake Kyoga after a violent storm capsized their boat. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in the waters of Walumbe Village, Kidera Town Council, Buyende District.

The deceased, identified as Simon Osina, 22, and Peter Kirya, 20, were reportedly using illegal fishing gear when the sudden downpour and strong winds overwhelmed their vessel.

Busoga North police spokesperson, Samson Lubega, confirmed that the strong weather conditions caused the boat to capsize, leading to the fatalities. He noted that a juvenile, operating an illegal boat nearby, also capsized but fortunately managed to reach safety and alert relatives.

Community members and police collaborated to retrieve the bodies, which have been taken to Kidera Health Centre IV for postmortem examinations. Police are urging the fishing community to avoid unauthorized and unsafe boats, especially during the current rainy season, to prevent further tragedies.

This incident follows a separate drowning on Lake Kyoga last month, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on the lake.
