Uganda’s Ministry of Health has raised its alert level due to a new Ebola outbreak declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The neighboring country has reported 13 laboratory-confirmed Ebola cases and an estimated 65 suspected deaths in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones.

Authorities in the DRC are also investigating an additional 246 suspected cases, with further laboratory results pending. Early indications suggest the outbreak may involve a novel strain of the Ebola virus, prompting urgent genomic sequencing for confirmation.

The proximity of the affected DRC regions to Uganda, coupled with significant cross-border population movement for mining and trade, has amplified regional concerns about potential transmission.

Ugandan Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng emphasized the country’s robust surveillance and rapid response mechanisms, which have been strengthened over the years with support from international partners like the US CDC. “We have built systems,” she stated, highlighting the network of community health workers and electronic reporting platforms designed for real-time detection and response.

Uganda has a history of effectively managing Ebola outbreaks, having successfully contained six since 2000. The country’s preparedness includes a nationwide laboratory network, mobile sample collection systems, and trained epidemiologists.

This heightened alert comes as Uganda recently declared its own Ebola outbreak over in April 2025, which registered 14 cases. Health experts reiterate that early detection, isolation, contact tracing, and safe burial practices are crucial in containing the spread of the virus.
