Residents of Karuswiga Village are living in fear after a chimpanzee attacked and critically injured a four-year-old girl, Kengonzi Pricia, on Friday evening. The child was reportedly playing at her home when the animal, believed to have emerged from the nearby Katyobona Forest, inflicted severe injuries to her head and chest and broke her leg.
The attack has brought back painful memories for the community, who have repeatedly voiced concerns about the growing conflict between humans and chimpanzees. The girl’s father, Isaac Gumisiriza, expressed his anguish, stating, “What pains me most is that these attacks have continued for years, yet the government has not come up with a permanent solution to protect us.”
Locals accuse the Uganda Wildlife Authority of failing to adequately address the issue, pointing to a history of similar incidents, including the death of a four-month-old baby in the same area last November. They attribute the heightened conflict to habitat degradation of forests like Katyobona, caused by charcoal burning, timber logging, and farming, which forces chimpanzees into human settlements in search of food.
Conservationists confirm that habitat destruction is the primary driver. Kutesa Swale Kadoma of Friends of Chimpanzees in Kagadi noted that over 80 people have been attacked and at least six killed by chimpanzees in the region since the 1990s, with several children among the victims in recent years.
This incident highlights a persistent problem that has even reached the attention of President Yoweri Museveni, who was briefed on the escalating attacks during a visit to Kagadi District last December, underscoring the urgent need for effective solutions.
