Masaka City Woman Member of Parliament, Justine Nameere Nsubuga, has been arrested by armed military personnel. The incident took place on Friday evening at Hotel Brovad in Masaka City.
Witnesses reported that the MP was intercepted by men in a vehicle with concealed number plates while leading a convoy celebrating her recent swearing-in. Her husband, Huzairuh Nsubuga, who was present, described how the armed individuals blocked their car and forcibly removed the legislator.
He further alleged that Nameere’s police bodyguard was subdued and that the soldiers took her to an undisclosed location without explanation. Her belongings were also reportedly confiscated from the vehicle.
The arrest follows a public dispute on social media between MP Nameere and David Kabanda, the Secretary General of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU). Their disagreement centered on the PLU’s decision to withdraw support for the re-election of Speaker Anita Among, with Nameere reportedly accusing Kabanda of political blackmail.
Sources suggest Nameere had been actively encouraging MPs allied with the PLU to continue supporting Speaker Among. Kabanda has also accused Nameere of attempting to disrupt support for PLU-backed speaker candidate Jackson Oboth Oboth.
As of the time of reporting, security agencies had not released an official statement concerning the arrest.
