Nearly two decades later, Prince Job Paulo Kafeero's legacy lives on amidst family disputes

Nineteen years after his death, Uganda’s beloved Kadongo Kamu singer Prince Job Paulo Kafeero’s lasting musical legacy is increasingly threatened by protracted family feuds over paternity and his estate.

Since Kafeero’s death in 2007, a steady stream of claimants has emerged, alleging paternity of children fathered by the musician, leading to uncertainty and conflict.

In 2019, a family meeting agreed to DNA testing for 14 claimants. However, the results, confirming only four biological children, were rejected by several claimants, deepening the mistrust and escalating the dispute into public domain.

The controversy has now reached a critical point, with some claimants, supported by junior minister Balaam Barugahara, proposing the exhumation of Kafeero’s remains for definitive DNA testing, a move that revives a stalled attempt from 2021.

While legal administrators maintain that previous court decisions and DNA findings have settled the matter, the push for exhumation signifies the persistent nature of these family conflicts.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway by the Prince Job Paul Kafeero Cultural Heritage Foundation to preserve and protect his extensive music catalogue, which is seen by many as his true and most enduring inheritance.
