The Parliament of Uganda has concluded a three-day swearing-in ceremony for the 12th Parliament, with 527 Members of Parliament (MPs) now formally inducted. The event, held on Friday, May 15, 2026, was a vibrant occasion, with newly elected MPs arriving accompanied by enthusiastic supporters.
This new cohort comprises 397 first-time legislators alongside 130 returning members from the 11th Parliament. The incoming MPs represent a diverse range of constituents and special interest groups, including youth, elderly, workers, and the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).
Many experienced parliamentarians are making a return, such as Hon. Nobert Mao and Hon. Chrispus Kiyonga, who previously served in earlier parliaments. The 12th Parliament also welcomes new voices like Hon. Jacqueline Mbabazi and Hon. Ofwono Opondo P’Odel, who will focus on representing the interests of the elderly.
Several new MPs have outlined their priorities. Hon. Fiona Nakku intends to advocate for a salary review board, while Hon. Jacqueline Mbabazi aims to be a strong voice for the elderly. Hon. Laura Kanushu is focused on increasing budgetary allocations for persons with disabilities and ensuring the operationalization of protective laws.
Among the UPDF representatives, seven are new to the House, joining three who served in the previous term. Similarly, for the MPs representing Persons with Disabilities, most have returned, with Hon. Robert Ssewagudde being the sole new entrant.
One legislator, Hon. Michael Bukenya, was absent and is expected to take his oath at a later date. The public gathered outside Parliament displayed considerable excitement throughout the swearing-in period, creating a lively atmosphere.
The newly sworn-in MPs are set for their first official sitting on May 25, 2025, where the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will take place, presided over by the Chief Justice or a designated judge.
