The official office of the Speaker of Parliament has been sealed off by detectives as a corruption investigation into former Speaker Anita Among intensifies.
Sources report that Ms. Among, on Monday evening, had personal documents and belongings removed from her office, allegedly facilitated by a cleaner acting on her instructions. This operation reportedly occurred without the notification of parliamentary authorities, including the Clerk to Parliament.
The action took place just hours before detectives raided Ms. Among’s home and subsequently sealed off her parliamentary office, citing the need to “avert any attempts to destroy or tamper with evidence.”
The ongoing probe, codenamed “Operation Maliza Ufisadi” (End Corruption), is reportedly targeting Ms. Among and members of her inner circle, including ministers and MPs. Detectives intercepted a cleaner with “crucial documents” at Parliament, prompting the move to secure the Speaker’s chambers and the Clerk’s office.
Parliamentary and NRM officials have offered limited comment on the events. Mr. Chris Obore, Director of Communications and Public Affairs at Parliament, stated that the matters were beyond his purview. Meanwhile, Mr. Emmanuel Lumala Dombo, NRM’s director of information and publicity, noted the unprecedented nature of a parliamentary transition occurring amidst a corruption investigation.
The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Joel Ssenyonyi, criticized the removal of documents as a “shameless attempt to hide or potentially destroy evidence,” while presidential press secretary Mr. Faruk Kirunda defended the independence of corruption investigation institutions.
Ms. Among withdrew from the race for the 12th Parliament Speaker position amid the ongoing investigations. Authorities reportedly plan to contact her seeking the return of 13 vehicles associated with her previous role and clarification on the documents removed by the cleaner.
