A delegation of European Union ambassadors recently visited the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom in Hoima City, engaging in discussions centered on the region’s burgeoning oil industry, agricultural potential, and the restitution of cultural artifacts. The visit, led by EU Ambassador Jan Sadek, included envoys from several European nations.
During the meeting, Bunyoro Kingdom Prime Minister Andrew Byakutaga Ateenyi highlighted the Kingdom’s historical significance and the deep losses incurred during colonial times, emphasizing the need for the return of cultural artifacts. He stressed that modern partnerships between Africa and Europe should prioritize cultural healing and historical justice.
Agriculture was identified as the backbone of Bunyoro’s economy. The Kingdom expressed interest in collaborating with European partners on modern irrigation, value chain development for coffee and cocoa, agro-processing, and climate-smart agriculture, with a particular focus on youth involvement in the sector.
Discussions also touched upon the oil and gas sector, with a strong advocacy for sustainable development, environmental protection, and ensuring local communities benefit from the industry. The delegation was impressed by the Kingdom’s rich heritage and expressed optimism for future collaborations, especially in areas that can improve livelihoods.
Bunyoro officials hope this engagement will pave the way for new partnerships to foster sustainable development and enhance the well-being of the Kingdom’s people. The visit aligns with the significant changes occurring in Bunyoro due to oil and gas development, infrastructure projects, and increased investment in agriculture and tourism.
