The government has initiated the process of reclaiming official vehicles assigned to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among. A fleet of at least seven vehicles, including police patrol cars, escort vehicles, and utility vehicles, has been returned to the Parliament’s parking yard.
This action aligns with standard procedures requiring outgoing officials to surrender government property upon the conclusion of their term. The directive is reinforced by the Parliamentary Pensions Act, which mandates the immediate return of official vehicles by retired speakers and deputy speakers.
The Office of the Clerk to Parliament had reportedly raised concerns regarding delays in the return of these vehicles, which are necessary for auditing, maintenance, and reassignment. The Parliamentary Commission is responsible for inventorying all government assets to ensure accountability.
This recovery of official vehicles comes amidst wider investigations into allegations of corruption and illicit enrichment. Separately, luxury private vehicles, cash, jewelry, and surveillance equipment have reportedly been seized from the former speaker’s residence, with several bank accounts allegedly frozen as part of the ongoing probe.
