A 49-year-year-old lawyer, Jimmy Awanga, is facing charges of obtaining money by false pretences and has been remanded to Luzira prison. He stands accused of defrauding businessman Ronald Mutebi of Shs193 million.
It is alleged that Awanga falsely claimed to be selling a piece of land located in Kiryamuli, specifically Kyadondo Block 82 Plot 3650, measuring 1.820 hectares. The transaction reportedly took place on February 20, 2025, with the funds deposited into Awanga’s personal bank account, despite him allegedly representing Stockwell Investments Capital Ltd.
The prosecution contends that Awanga received an initial Shs150 million on February 20, 2024, followed by an additional Shs43 million on June 4, 2024. He allegedly promised to clear any encumbrances on the land and provide vacant possession, but failed to do so and subsequently became unreachable.
Awanga pleaded not guilty to the charges at the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court. His defense lawyer indicated an intention to apply for bail, but the Chief Magistrate was unable to access the necessary electronic documents. The case has been adjourned to June 4, 2026, for the bail application hearing, and the prosecution has been ordered to disclose evidence to the defense.
The complaint was lodged by Mr. Mutebi on July 30, 2025, after the land transaction failed to materialize.
