Blacks Power FC’s return to the Uganda Premier League marks a significant achievement for the club and Northern Uganda’s football landscape. Founded in 2006 as Bukedea Town Council FC by Agnes Mugena, the club’s journey has been one of perseverance, marked by name changes, ground challenges, and eventual rebrandings.
The initial struggle for support under the Bukedea Town Council name led to a rebranding to Blacks Power FC in 2020. However, their home ground in Bukedea was deemed unfit for the FUFA Big League, forcing a relocation to Lira. This move, while controversial for some, placed them closer to key stakeholders and in a region hungry for top-tier football.
Northern Uganda had been without a Premier League representative for over a decade since the relegation of Boro Boro Tigers and Gulu United. Blacks Power’s arrival filled this void, igniting passion among local fans. The club implemented robust fan engagement and sensitization programs, ensuring a disciplined home atmosphere, even amidst challenging Big League games.
Their first promotion came in the 2021/22 season under coach Vialli Bainomugisha. However, their top-flight stint was short-lived, and they were relegated after a single season. Ownership also saw adjustments, with Dr. Patrick Ogwel stepping back after his appointment as NCS General Secretary.
Following a disappointing 8th-place finish in the 2023/24 season, the club appointed Michael “Skillz” Lukyamuzi, who had previously led NEC FC’s rise. With a reinforced squad featuring experienced players and key mid-season additions, Blacks Power secured their promotion, finishing atop the league table. Their dedication was evident throughout the campaign, culminating in a return to the elite league, carrying the lessons learned from their previous relegation.
Fans are hopeful that the ongoing renovations at the Akii Bua Memorial Stadium will be completed in time for the upcoming season, providing a fitting home for the newly promoted side.
