Hoima City is gearing up for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a new emergency water project. The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has announced plans to establish a water production system, set to draw water from the River Kafu. This initiative is crucial for bolstering the water supply to Hoima City and key facilities designated to host AFCON-related activities, including the upcoming Hoima Stadium and Kabalega International Airport.

NWSC Managing Director, Dr. Silver Mugisha, revealed that the project has already been advertised, with construction slated to begin in July 2026. The aim is to complete the works within eight to nine months, ensuring readiness for the continental tournament in March 2027. This intervention is designed to preempt potential water shortages during AFCON and address the increasing demand driven by Hoima’s rapid urbanization and infrastructure development.

The new system will also cater to the anticipated surge in demand from hotels, businesses, residential areas, and institutions during the event. This development occurs as NWSC manages ongoing water supply challenges in other parts of the country, attributed to engineering works and escalating demand. The corporation is implementing its Strategic Plan 2025–2030, which includes various infrastructure expansion projects in several towns and cities nationwide to enhance production capacity and reliability for growing populations.
