President Yoweri Museveni has proposed a significant relaxation of visa regulations for international tourists, advocating for a three-year multiple-entry visa. He questioned the necessity of frequent visa renewals for visitors who bring substantial revenue into the country and highlighted the critical role of tourism in Uganda’s economic growth.

In his address at the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo 2026, Museveni emphasized that as Uganda ascends to a lower-middle-income status, a robust tourism sector is essential for propelling the nation towards higher-income levels and global recognition. He pledged the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting the tourism industry, recognizing its interconnectedness with sectors like hospitality, ICT, and entertainment.

“By coming here, you help us to advance our economy to a high, middle-income level status, and a first-world country,” the President stated, directly contrasting the current short-term visa policies with the longer durations often granted by other nations, such as the United States.

Museveni also touched upon the eroding impact of colonial borders on regional markets, noting Uganda’s ongoing efforts with neighboring countries like the DRC, Kenya, and South Sudan to foster greater market integration. He reiterated that Uganda remains a safe destination, addressing concerns about the Ebola outbreak and assuring that the situation is under control and that rigorous screening measures are in place at official entry points.

Further directives were issued to suspend border markets that pose a risk for disease transmission, ensuring close monitoring of individuals. He also praised the natural beauty and diversity of Uganda as a prime tourist attraction, underscoring the importance of regional cooperation in marketing shared tourism experiences.

This initiative, if implemented, aims to streamline the travel process for tourists, encouraging longer stays and repeat visits, thereby enhancing Uganda’s appeal as a premier tourist destination and contributing to its economic advancement. https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/news/national/museveni-proposes-a-three-year-multiple-entry-visa-regime-for-tourists-5468802
