In a significant development, joint security forces raided the country residences of outgoing Parliament Speaker Anita Among in Bukedea District on Friday. The operation, which lasted for approximately four hours, involved a coordinated team from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), Uganda Police Force, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (CID), Internal Security Organisation (ISO), and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
The search took place at Among’s home in Aputiput village, Kamutur sub-county, and extended to her mother’s home in Apopong village, Kolir sub-county. Security personnel cordoned off both locations, restricting access throughout the duration of the search. Media representatives were reportedly denied entry, though they observed security officers loading sealed boxes into a police vehicle.
This action comes as Anita Among, the Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament, faces ongoing investigations into allegations of corruption and illicit wealth accumulation. These allegations have surfaced following her tenure as deputy speaker and subsequently speaker of the 11th Parliament, particularly after the passing of Jacob Oulanyah. Sources within the security apparatus indicate that the investigation remains active and could potentially involve properties connected to some of her close political associates in the Bukedea district.
Among has consistently maintained her innocence regarding the accusations. Her legal counsel, Caleb Alaka, was present during the search at her residences. The investigation into her financial dealings is ongoing.
