John Bosco Sserunkuuma was sworn in on May 22, 2026, as the new Mayor of Nansana Municipality, embarking on a five-year term guided by a 10-point program. The ceremony, held under tight security as a precautionary measure against Ebola, saw the new mayor outline his commitment to tackling pressing concerns within the municipality.
Sserunkuuma’s agenda prioritizes issues such as the heavy tax burden on traders and landlords, widespread unemployment, inadequate road infrastructure, and the critical problem of poor waste management. He also plans to address the ongoing challenges faced by individuals who have encroached on wetlands, many of whom were displaced and are now living in difficult conditions, by organizing a fundraiser to secure land for their relocation.
With only 19 kilometers of tarmac out of 900 roads in Nansana, the mayor aims to improve connectivity and boost trade through road construction, leveraging the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Development Programme. He also intends to review and regulate tax collection practices to ensure fairness and prevent harassment of taxpayers.
To combat unemployment, Sserunkuuma plans to expand existing markets and establish skilling centers to equip the youth with vocational training. Waste management is another significant focus, with initiatives to provide each of the four divisions with a garbage collection truck and mandate households to properly store waste for collection.
The mayor further aims to upgrade Buwambo Health Centre IV to hospital status to alleviate pressure on larger referral hospitals and is a vocal advocate against corruption, citing his own past imprisonment for refusing to compromise his principles.
The municipality faces significant challenges, including a lack of functional garbage trucks in most divisions and a constant struggle with overflowing waste in public spaces. The new administration faces the task of improving services amidst budgetary constraints and a diverse council composition.
