Uganda has been chosen to host a crucial continental Ebola coordination centre, a move spearheaded by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). President Yoweri Museveni announced the development after a meeting with Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya at State House Entebbe.
The proposed center, to be based in Kampala, will serve as an Incident Management Support Team for Ebola, enhancing regional coordination and monitoring efforts. This decision underscores Uganda’s growing role in continental health security and its commitment to preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
Africa CDC’s proposal aims to strengthen cross-border surveillance, streamline emergency response, and provide essential technical assistance to nations grappling with Ebola outbreaks. The initiative comes as neighbouring countries have experienced recent Ebola outbreaks, prompting heightened vigilance within Uganda.
President Museveni expressed Uganda’s full support for the initiative, emphasizing the country’s extensive experience in managing previous Ebola outbreaks. He stated, “With proper attention and preparedness, Ebola is very manageable.” This past success positions Uganda as a capable leader in regional epidemic control.
Dr. Kaseya lauded Uganda’s preparedness and reaffirmed the importance of a unified African approach to health crises. “Following our cross-border meeting with Ministers of Health of the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan, Africa will have one common plan to guide our collective response to this threat,” he remarked.
Ugandan health authorities have been intensifying screening at border crossings and bolstering preparedness at healthcare facilities. The nation has pledged support to neighboring countries, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo, in their containment efforts, reinforcing its commitment to regional health security.
