Three months after launching military actions against Iran, questions are being raised about the effectiveness of U.S. President Donald Trump’s strategy, with some analysts suggesting he may be losing the broader conflict despite tactical wins.
While the U.S. military has achieved certain objectives, Iran’s ability to influence the Strait of Hormuz, its resistance to nuclear concessions, and the survival of its government remain challenges. This has led to growing skepticism about whether Trump can secure a clear geopolitical victory.
Some experts argue that Trump’s claims of triumph ring hollow, as the situation remains a precarious balance between uncertain diplomacy and renewed threats of military strikes, which would likely provoke Iranian retaliation. The standoff risks leaving the U.S. and its allies worse off, while Iran, though economically and militarily impacted, may have increased leverage.
“We’re three months in, and it’s looking like a war that was designed to be a short-term romp for Trump is turning into a long-term strategic failure,” commented Aaron David Miller, a former Middle East negotiator. The perception of losing is a significant concern for Trump, especially given his sensitivity to being seen as a “loser.”
U.S. officials maintain that military objectives have been met, with White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales stating that “President Trump holds all the cards and wisely keeps all options on the table.” However, the conflict, which has lasted longer than Trump’s initial predicted timeframe, has seen initial airstrikes degrade Iran’s military capabilities. Yet, Tehran has responded by disrupting shipping and launching attacks, while U.S. efforts like blockading ports have yet to achieve their aims.
Trump’s stated war aims, including preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, ending regional threats, and facilitating regime change, appear largely unachieved. Analysts suggest Iran may view its survival of the U.S. assault as a success and has demonstrated its capacity to inflict economic pain and disrupt global oil supplies.
The conflict has also strained relations with European allies, who were not consulted, and provided strategic lessons for China and Russia regarding U.S. military limitations. Some observers, like Robert Kagan of the Brookings Institution, foresee a significant setback to U.S. standing, potentially more impactful than previous withdrawals from Vietnam and Afghanistan.
