The Uganda Cubs are set to compete on the global stage once more, having earned their spot at the Fifa U-17 World Cup for the second consecutive time. This achievement was secured after a nail-biting 8-7 penalty shootout win against Ghana’s Black Starlets, capping off an entertaining 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Ghana initially took an early lead in the match, but the Cubs gradually found their footing. A tactical shift to a back-three formation by the Ugandan technical bench helped them gain better control of the game. Their resilience paid off before halftime when captain Owen Mukisa scored a spectacular goal directly from a corner kick, leveling the score.
In the second half, Uganda showed renewed vigor, creating several chances. Despite their pressure, Ghana managed to regain the lead against the run of play. However, the Cubs demonstrated remarkable determination, fighting back to equalize late in the game. A VAR review led to a penalty for a handball, which Arafat Ibanda calmly converted, forcing the match into a shootout.
During the penalty shootout, Uganda’s composure shone through as they converted all their kicks. Goalkeeper Ashraf Lukyamuzi then made a pivotal save, and Travor Mubiru sealed the victory by scoring the decisive penalty, sparking wild celebrations among the team and supporters.
This qualification marks another significant milestone for Ugandan football. The team has been drawn into Group C for the upcoming tournament, where they will face formidable opponents: Argentina, Australia, and Denmark.
