Charity Namuswe traded the classroom for the challenging yet rewarding field of psychiatric nursing, motivated by a deep-seated desire to help young people navigate mental health issues.

Namuswe, an assistant nursing officer at Bbaale Health Centre IV in Kayunga, found her calling after observing many teenagers struggling with substance abuse, risky behaviours, and a lack of emotional support. This personal observation fueled her to pursue specialized training at Butabika School of Psychiatric Nursing.

Her nine years of service at Kangulumira Health Centre IV provided invaluable experience in community mental health, where she focused on patient care, counselling, and raising awareness to reduce the pervasive stigma surrounding mental illness. She believes that early intervention and accessible support are crucial for positive outcomes.

Beyond her clinical duties, Namuswe established the Namuswe Charity Foundation. This initiative aims to create safe spaces for young people to openly discuss their challenges, receive guidance, and develop life skills. She highlights that while mental illness has complex origins, including genetic and environmental factors, community support and accessible care can lead to significant recovery.

Despite her dedication, Namuswe acknowledges the significant hurdles in mental healthcare. Stigma remains a major barrier, deterring individuals from seeking help. Furthermore, a chronic shortage of mental health professionals in public facilities exacerbates the problem, with many cases going untreated. She advocates for increased government investment in mental health services and the expansion of specialized healthcare workers.

Namuswe’s story underscores the critical need for accessible and compassionate mental health support, particularly for vulnerable youth, and her efforts contribute to a growing movement to destigmatize mental health in Uganda.
