West Budama Central’s Jacob Marksons Oboth has ascended to the role of Speaker for the 12th Parliament, triumphing with 441 votes in an election overseen by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija. The historic first sitting took place at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on May 25, 2026, attended by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Oboth, nominated by Hon. Jessica Alupo and seconded by Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, emphasized his gratitude to God and acknowledged the support of President Museveni and his constituents. He pledged to serve impartially, stating, “To those who may not have voted for me, I will be your Speaker too.” He outlined his leadership vision centered on seven pillars, including zero tolerance for corruption, enhanced accountability, and evidence-based debate.

Meanwhile, Thomas Tayebwa of Ruhinda North County secured the position of Deputy Speaker, receiving 457 votes. He defeated candidates from the FDC and UPC parties. Tayebwa expressed his commitment to serving with fairness and working collaboratively with Speaker Oboth.

President Museveni congratulated the new leadership but cautioned against complacency, urging elected officials to focus on delivering services to the citizenry. He reiterated his commitment to wealth creation programs and warned that underperforming leaders would face dismissal. The President stressed the importance of Parliament closely monitoring funds allocated for poverty reduction and job creation initiatives.

The Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on June 4, 2026, for the President’s State of the Nation Address.
