Thomas Tayebwa has secured another five-year term as the Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, following a decisive victory during the opening session of the 12th Parliament. Tayebwa, representing Ruhinda North County, garnered 457 votes in a secret ballot at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

This outcome further entrenches the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s firm grip on the highest leadership positions within Parliament. The election results underscore the NRM’s substantial majority, reportedly comprising over 372 legislators in the 12th Parliament.

Tayebwa’s re-election came shortly after the newly elected Speaker, Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth, took his oath and delivered his inaugural address. Oboth-Oboth pledged to serve all members fairly, regardless of how they voted. He acknowledged the endorsements from the NRM party, its executive committee, caucus, and the Parliament itself, extending his gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for his confidence.

In his acceptance speech, Tayebwa pledged his support for the new Speaker’s vision and highlighted the shared focus on addressing poverty as a national priority, echoing sentiments previously expressed by President Museveni.

President Museveni commented on the election results, characterizing the NRM’s strategy as a “big alarm” that brings together party members, independents, and even some opposition members. He noted the considerable support for both Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa, indicating a successful mobilization effort beyond the NRM’s core numbers.

The back-to-back wins for Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa mark a comprehensive consolidation of parliamentary leadership by the NRM to commence the 12th Parliament.
