A somber mood has enveloped the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) following a fatal accident that claimed the lives of three staff members. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 24, near Karuma, when the van carrying the employees collided with an elephant.
The ill-fated journey saw the URA team travelling from the West Nile region back to Kampala. Reports suggest the collision happened approximately 10 kilometers before the Karuma Bridge.
Eyewitnesses reported that the impact of the crash with the elephant was followed by an aggressive response from the animal, which further damaged the vehicle. This led to the tragic deaths of the URA employees inside.
Among those confirmed deceased is Robert Wamala, who served as a Tax Education Officer at URA. Wamala was also recognized for his earlier career as a journalist with the former WBS Television, a loss keenly felt by his colleagues in both fields.
Official details from authorities regarding the exact circumstances of the crash are still pending. The news has sent shockwaves through the URA, as well as among Wamala’s friends and the broader media community, who remember his contributions to public service and journalism.
