Residents of Bugiri Municipality have voiced their urgent concerns to newly elected Members of Parliament, demanding tangible solutions to pressing local problems. The primary issues highlighted include the disastrous state of Bugiri Central Market, the deteriorating condition of roads, and persistent flooding due to clogged drainage systems.
Bugiri Central Market, a vital revenue source for the municipality, is currently overwhelmed. Traders are decrying the unsanitary conditions, with overflowing pit latrines and a lack of proper facilities. The situation has worsened following the eviction of some traders who were operating outside the main structure, leading to increased congestion and heightened risks of fire and disease outbreaks.
“We are working under threats because anything can happen at any time, including fire or disease outbreaks. We need immediate intervention,” stated Badiru Kilego, chairperson of the Bugiri Central Market Traders Association. Mayor Ayubu Kisiki Mulikiliza acknowledged the complaints and stated that new latrines are planned for the upcoming budget, pending the release of funds from the central government.
Newly elected MP John Francis Oketcho has pledged to raise the market’s plight with the relevant ministry in Parliament once appointed. He also urged political unity, encouraging all constituents to approach him regardless of their previous political affiliations.
Beyond the market, residents are calling for improved road maintenance and effective waste management. Concerns about the alleged misuse of government funds have also been raised, with calls for increased accountability and tighter monitoring of public projects.
NRM National Treasurer Barbara Nekesa Oundo emphasized that this term would see a strengthened focus on monitoring government projects to ensure service delivery and warned leaders against corruption. The sentiment among residents is clear: expectant of action, not just promises, from their newly elected representatives.
