Uganda’s burgeoning luxury hospitality sector took center stage at the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) in Munyonyo, as the government unveiled ambitious plans to solidify the nation’s position as a global travel destination.
President Yoweri Museveni, officially opening the expo, championed significant structural reforms to Uganda’s immigration system, including the proposed introduction of a three-year tourist visa. This initiative aims to streamline entry processes and encourage longer stays, enhancing the visitor experience.
“The Pearl of Africa”, as famously dubbed by Winston Churchill, offers more than just breathtaking landscapes, according to President Museveni. He emphasized the nation’s rich cultural tapestry, unique indigenous cuisine, and a secure environment as key attractions for international tourists.
The tourism sector is experiencing robust growth, evidenced by a 19.7% increase in international arrivals and a rise in annual earnings from Shs 4.85 trillion to Shs 5.82 trillion. Ihunde Resort, a luxury boutique destination situated on the picturesque Bulago Island in Lake Victoria, is actively leveraging this momentum.
Ihunde Resort General Manager George Senkatuka stated at the expo, “Our goal at POATE is to showcase Bulago Island as more than a leisure destination. We want people to see the investment, community, and tourism potential that exists here.” The resort positions itself as a serene escape, merging natural beauty with high-end comfort and adventure, attracting those seeking tranquil, nature-focused experiences accessible from Kampala.
Human Resource Manager at Ihunde Resort, Susan Kassami, highlighted the ripple effect of this high-end hospitality expansion. “Beyond the resort itself, Ihunde supports fishermen, farmers, transport providers, artisans, tour operators, and several local service providers who are part of Bulago Island’s growing tourism economy,” she noted. This indicates that the economic benefits of increased tourism are extending to local communities, integrating them into the formal economy.
With POATE successfully convening regional stakeholders, investors, and international buyers, and with major events like the Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon, there is palpable optimism for sustained growth in visitor arrivals.
