Business Coaching Emerges as Key to African SME Growth

While access to finance has long been the focus of SME support in Africa, foundational structural weaknesses continue to hinder growth. Business coaching, through programs like Ankolo Consulting's Masterclass, is emerging as a critical intervention to address these gaps and unlock scalable expansion for enterprises. For years, the primary avenue for supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Africa has been centered on improving access to capital. However, this approach has often fallen short, as the fundamental challenges within many businesses—ranging from unclear strategic direction to inefficient internal systems—persist, preventing them from scaling, attracting investment, or even surviving.

Ankolo Consulting’s Business Coaching Masterclass Programme aims to address this disparity. Positioned as a practical intervention rather than just training, the program focuses on developing a new cohort of business coaches equipped to support African enterprises directly. The curriculum integrates proprietary tools, real-world application, and a dual focus on leadership and systems to tackle the underlying issues that often impede growth.

Paul Musoke, Founder and Managing Partner of Ankolo Consulting, highlights that decades of financial sector growth in Africa have not translated into robust enterprise development. He explains that businesses, due to their complex risk profiles and operational unpredictability, often struggle to secure financing. The Masterclass, therefore, prioritizes strengthening entrepreneurs and their teams, improving their understanding of the competitive landscape, fostering innovation, and clarifying strategic priorities to enhance their scalability and investment appeal.

The program’s methodology blends systemic team coaching, Gestalt approaches, and Blue Ocean Strategy. This combination allows businesses to analyze internal stakeholders, tap into their core industry knowledge for innovation, and strategically prioritize initiatives to establish a distinct market position. The hands-on nature of the masterclass, requiring participants to coach real clients pro-bono, is crucial for building confidence and practical application, with client feedback significantly contributing to participant assessment.

This model extends beyond coaching to encompass strategy development, change management, and facilitating connections with financiers. By providing an end-to-end approach, Ankolo Consulting aims to prepare businesses for investment readiness, ensuring they have a clear strategic direction, robust structures, and a track record of success, thereby unlocking their potential to drive economic growth and employment across the continent.
