Peruth Chemutai continued her impressive run in the Wanda Diamond League season, securing her second consecutive victory at the Xiamen leg on Saturday.

Chemutai crossed the finish line in 8:51.06, setting a new world lead and meeting record in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. This marked the first time a Ugandan athlete has won two successive Diamond League events.

Her performance saw her pull away from strong competitors, including reigning Olympic champion Winfred Yavi Mutile of Bahrain and world champion Faith Cherotich of Kenya, who finished second and third respectively.

While Chemutai expressed satisfaction with her performance, stating “My body is feeling good,” the blistering heat of approximately 30 degrees Centigrade hampered her ambition to break the world record. “The goal was the world record but the temperatures became too high. And the humidity was high. We couldn’t get the target. Next time, the world record is possible for her,” explained her coach Denis Okudach.

Chemutai’s personal best of 8:48.03, set in Rome last year, places her third on the all-time list, behind Mutile (8:44.39) and the world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech (8:44.32).

In other events, Ugandan Keneth Kiprop finished 10th in the men’s 5000 metres with a time of 13:08.79, while Harbert Kibet was 15th with a season’s best of 13:46.45.

Her historic back-to-back wins highlight her strong form as she aims for further success in the season. The source article can be found at https://www.monitor.ug/uganda/sports/athletics/chemutai-waits-on-for-world-record-5473960.
