President Yoweri Museveni has announced the reappointment of Peter Ogwang as the State Minister for Sports, signaling a continuation of leadership in the ministry. Ogwang, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ngariam County in Katakwi District, brings experience from previous roles, including State Minister for Information, Communication, ICT, and National Guidance, and State Minister for Economic Monitoring.
His prior appointment to head the sports ministry was in July 2022, replacing Denis Hamson Obua. This reappointment comes at a critical juncture for Ugandan sports.
Foremost among Ogwang’s responsibilities is overseeing Uganda’s preparations to co-host the prestigious 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The tournament, branded ‘Pamoja’, will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, presenting a significant organizational challenge and opportunity for the region.
Furthermore, the continuity in leadership is expected to be welcomed by many within the national sports fraternity. Sports organizations are currently navigating a complex transition period as they work to comply with the provisions of the new Sports Act 2023. Ogwang’s familiarity with the ministry’s operations and ongoing initiatives is likely to provide stability during this transformative phase.
In related cabinet changes, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, who played a key role in the development of the Sports Act, has moved from his position as Attorney General to lead the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs. This reshuffle sees a shift in responsibilities for other key figures as well.
The retention of Peter Ogwang assures a degree of consistency as Uganda gears up for major sporting events and legislative reforms.
