The city of Lilongwe, Malawi, recently hosted the inaugural Uganda Diaspora Convention, a significant event designed to channel investment from Ugandans living abroad back into their home country. The convention, spearheaded by the Ugandan High Commission in Tanzania, saw participation from Ugandan expatriates residing and working not only in Malawi but also in neighboring southern African nations.

During the convention, Hope Waira, a Senior Investment Executive at the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), delivered an encouraging address. She urged the diaspora to capitalize on numerous investment opportunities available in key sectors. These include commercial agriculture, agro-industrialization, mineral development, tourism, science, technology, and innovation, ICT, real estate, and service industries such as education, healthcare, and hospitality.

Waira further emphasized the UIA’s role as an Investor One-Stop Centre, accessible via www.ebiz.go.ug. The authority is committed to assisting the Ugandan diaspora in establishing businesses and fulfilling their investment goals. She also highlighted the Ugandan government’s provision of substantial tax and non-tax incentives, alongside streamlined business processes, to ensure competitive returns for all investors.

Furthermore, Robert Tugume from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Consular Department outlined the consular services available to Ugandans abroad. He underscored the department’s collaborative efforts with Ugandan missions worldwide to safeguard the welfare and interests of its citizens overseas.

The convention served as a crucial platform for fostering economic engagement and encouraging the diaspora to contribute to Uganda’s prosperity. The event underscored the government’s commitment to creating a favorable investment climate. For more details on this initiative, visit the Uganda Investment Authority website.
