A significant segment of the Bugisu Sub-region populace has voiced strong dissatisfaction following President Yoweri Museveni’s latest cabinet appointments.

The core grievance stems from the perceived neglect of the sub-region, which they argue has been denied a full Cabinet position and instead allocated two State Minister roles.

Currently, Lydia Wanyoto Mutende has been appointed as the State Minister for Public Service, while Simon Mulongo takes on the role of Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development, focusing on Employment and Industrial Relations. Wanyoto also serves as the Woman Member of Parliament for Mbale City.

This situation is seen as a continuation of a trend, as the previous cabinet also featured two state ministers from the region, a reduction from earlier appointments that typically included a Cabinet Minister and at least two state ministers.

“We are not happy as Bagisu. We have again been neglected by the president,” lamented Mr. Yusuf Masaba, an elder and Mbale City resident, reflecting a widespread sentiment of disappointment.

Historically, Bugisu has been a politically influential area, playing a crucial role in the nation’s independence and post-independence political landscape, producing prominent leaders. However, some attribute the region’s current political standing to the loss of such influential figures and a lack of unity and strategic leadership in recent years.

In contrast, the Tororo district has expressed gratitude for its representation in the new cabinet. Sanjay Tanna has been appointed as the Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, and Mogode Ikuya retained his position as Minister of State for East African Affairs. Local leaders in Tororo thanked the President for the two ministerial appointments, also noting the presence of Jacob Oboth Oboth as Speaker of Parliament, which they consider a significant achievement for the district.
