Despite the profound personal tragedy of his son’s drowning, Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) Director Major Tom Magambo has affirmed his commitment to continuing a critical investigation into corruption allegations against several government officials, including former Speaker Anita Among.
Magambo’s 18-year-old son, Timothy Muganzi Magambo, a student at the University at Albany in the United States, reportedly drowned last week. Addressing mourners at a requiem mass, Magambo revealed that while prominent figures like Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and Principal Judge Jane Frances Abodo had urged him to take time off for his grief, he felt compelled to remain focused on his duties.
He described the current investigation, which involves the Special Forces Command and Defence Intelligence, as a “generational war” assigned by President Yoweri Museveni. “How could I not stay involved in the work? This week has been extremely dangerous for me. You know we have political indiscipline in this country, and I had a task I was supposed to carry out. As I was doing it, my son also died. Now, what do you do? Do you tell your troops to cry and run away as their commander?” Magambo stated.
Senior officials, including Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, advised Magambo to allow himself time to mourn, emphasizing life’s fragility. Principal Judge Abodo recounted Magambo’s dedication, noting he was still updating her on the corruption probe minutes after learning of his son’s death. Tayebwa also commended Magambo’s strength in the face of immense personal loss.
Magambo shared details of his son’s tragic accident, where he struggled in the water, and despite medical efforts, suffered irreversible brain damage. Timothy Muganzi Magambo is scheduled to be buried at their ancestral home in Masindi.
