At 88 and 87 years old, Dr. Ezra Nkwasibwe and his wife, Loi Busingye Nkwasibwe, are a testament to enduring love, celebrating 61 years of marriage. Their union, which began in 1965 after a seven-year courtship, has been anchored by a unique blend of principles, including a profound fear of God and a deep-seated aversion to public shame.
Both Dr. Nkwasibwe, a former Minister of Health and Animal Industry and Fisheries, and Mrs. Nkwasibwe, a former Member of Parliament and businesswoman, come from distinguished families of Anglican church leaders. This background instilled in them a strong sense of discipline and a desire to uphold their reputation, which they believe has played a crucial role in navigating marital challenges.
“Marriage is not about never fighting, but about fighting and then forgiving before the sun goes down,” shares Mrs. Nkwasibwe. The couple emphasizes the importance of immediate conflict resolution and a conscious effort to protect each other’s name and reputation. Their commitment to these values, alongside regular church attendance, forms the bedrock of their long and vibrant partnership.
Having both retired from active politics and public service—Dr. Nkwasibwe focusing on his medical practice and Mrs. Nkwasibwe choosing not to seek re-election—they now dedicate their time to their faith and offering guidance. They regularly receive visitors seeking their wisdom, sharing insights on maintaining a strong marriage and offering advice to politicians on integrity and yielding political space.
Their journey underscores that a successful marriage requires continuous effort, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to upholding values, even under public scrutiny. The Nkwasibwes’ story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that a marriage built on faith, discipline, and a commitment to resolving issues promptly can indeed last a lifetime.
