In response to a concerning rise in Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda has implemented a temporary closure of its border with the neighboring nation.
The decision was made by the National Task Force on Ebola Response, chaired by Vice President Jessica Alupo, according to Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine. While Uganda has recorded seven Ebola cases, including the initial index case that proved fatal, the escalating situation in the DRC necessitated this precautionary measure.
The border closure is set to last for approximately four weeks, with the aim of minimizing the potential for cross-border transmissions. The task force also resolved to restrict movement in and out of the country under enhanced surveillance. Travelers returning from the DRC will be required to undergo a mandatory 21-day self-isolation period, monitored by health officials.
Exceptions to the border closure are limited to authorized Ebola response teams, humanitarian operations, essential food and cargo transportation, and security personnel. All individuals falling under these exceptions will be subjected to rigorous health screenings and monitoring protocols at all entry points.
Despite the border closure, schools in districts bordering the DRC will remain open. However, they are mandated to strictly adhere to Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). School authorities must identify and monitor students who have recently returned from the DRC, checking their temperatures daily for 21 days. Designated health facilities in border districts will be equipped to monitor any learner developing symptoms during this period.
Security agencies have been tasked with ensuring strict enforcement of all Ebola prevention and control guidelines. Additionally, media houses are directed to allocate prime-time slots for public education campaigns on Ebola prevention, detection, and reporting.
