Alupo and Nabbanja Reappointed to Key Government Roles by Parliament
Uganda's Parliament has formally approved the reappointment of Hon. Jessica Alupo as Vice President and Hon. Robinah Nabbanja as Prime Minister. Lawmakers in the Ugandan Parliament have overwhelmingly endorsed the reappointment of Hon. Jessica Alupo as Vice President and Hon. Robinah Nabbanja as Prime Minister. The approvals were secured via a show of hands during a parliamentary session chaired by the new Speaker, Rt Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth.
This signifies a continuation of their roles from the previous term, with their appointments needing parliamentary ratification under Article 108 of the Constitution, requiring a simple majority for confirmation.
During the deliberations, Sheema South MP, Hon. Ephraim Kamuntu, moved the motion to approve Alupo, highlighting her extensive leadership experience. He cited her previous roles as Minister for Education and Sports, State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, and her dedication in executive, legislative, and military capacities. Kampala Central Division Representative, Hon. Minsa Kabanda, seconded the motion, commending Alupo for effectively representing Uganda on international platforms, including the United Nations General Assembly and various African Union and BRICS meetings.
Lira City Woman MP, Hon. Ruth Aceng, proposed Nabbanja’s approval, praising her hardworking and hands-on approach during her tenure. Aceng specifically noted Nabbanja’s role in coordinating the COVID-19 response and her efforts in disaster relief distribution. The Prime Minister was also commended for her performance in Parliament, efficiently managing government business and responding to a high percentage of parliamentary queries.
Following their approval, Vice President Alupo conveyed her gratitude and pledged continued commitment to service, urging for unity and a focus on the electorate’s interests, particularly in wealth and job creation. Prime Minister Nabbanja also pledged to strengthen the executive-legislature relationship and lead a responsive service delivery team.
In related news, the National Unity Platform reappointed Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi as Leader of the Opposition and Hon. Paul Mwiru as Chief Opposition Whip. Ssenyonyi emphasized the importance of parliamentary oversight in keeping the government accountable.
