Joel Ssenyonyi Reappointed Leader of Opposition by NUP

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced key leadership positions within the opposition in Parliament, confirming Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi will continue as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP). This decision solidifies Ssenyonyi’s role in spearheading the opposition’s agenda in the legislative body.

Alongside Ssenyonyi’s reappointment, NUP has also retained Paul Mwiru, the MP for Jinja South Division East, as the Chief Opposition Whip. Harriet Nakwede, the woman representative for Kayunga District, will continue as the Deputy Chief Opposition Whip, ensuring continuity in the party’s parliamentary whip structure.

Several other significant appointments were made across various committees. John Baptist Nambeshe, MP for Manjiya County, will serve as a Commissioner of Parliament. Patrick Nsamba Oshabe, MP for Kassanda County North, has been appointed Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), with Sarah Lwansasula, Jinja City Woman Representative, as its Vice Chairperson.

Further appointments include Nkunyingi Muwadda (Kyadondo East MP) as Chairperson of the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE), deputised by George Musisi (Kira Municipality MP). Francis Zaake Butebi (Mityana Municipality MP) retains his position as Chairperson of the Government Assurances Committee, joined by Anna Adeke Ebaju (Soroti District Woman Representative) as Vice Chairperson.

Betty Nambooze Bakireke, MP for Mukono Municipality, will chair the Local Government Accounts Committee, with Abed Nasser Mudobole (Iganga Municipality MP) serving as her deputy. Key roles in international parliamentary bodies were also filled, including representatives to the Pan-African Parliament, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, and the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States, among others. These appointments were communicated by NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya.
