Parliament Endorses Alupo as Vice President, Nabbanja as Premier for Second Terms

Parliament has officially confirmed the reappointment of Hon. Jessica Alupo as Vice President and Hon. Robinah Nabbanja as Prime Minister. The approval, which took place on Thursday, May 28, 2026, under the guidance of the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, followed constitutional requirements for a simple majority vote.

Both Alupo and Nabbanja will be continuing in the positions they held during the previous term, marking a significant endorsement of their past performance.

During the parliamentary session, Hon. Ephraim Kamuntu moved the motion to approve Alupo, highlighting her extensive leadership experience. He cited her prior roles as Minister for Education and Sports, State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, and her background in military instruction, describing her as a dedicated and transformative patriot.

Hon. Minsa Kabanda supported Alupo’s nomination, emphasizing her effective representation of Uganda on international platforms, including the United Nations General Assembly and various African Union summits. Kabanda noted Alupo’s crucial role in projecting Uganda’s voice on the global stage alongside the President.

On Nabbanja’s reappointment, MPs lauded her hands-on approach, diligence, and accessibility during her tenure. Hon. Ruth Aceng, who moved the motion for Nabbanja’s approval, recalled her exemplary coordination of government business, including the distribution of relief during the COVID-19 pandemic and her response to natural disasters.

Aceng also commended Nabbanja’s performance in Parliament, noting her active participation in debates and her responsiveness to parliamentary questions.

Both Alupo and Nabbanja expressed their gratitude for the renewed opportunity. Alupo called for unity in Parliament and urged MPs to focus on wealth and job creation, aiming to integrate 33 million households into the money economy.

Nabbanja pledged to strengthen the connection between the executive and legislative branches, committing to lead a service delivery team that addresses the needs of the Ugandan people. In related news, the National Unity Platform re-appointed Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi as Leader of the Opposition and Hon. Paul Mwiru as Chief Opposition Whip.
