Busoga’s leaders have unveiled a strategic blueprint aimed at transforming the sub-region into a fast-growing economy with enhanced household incomes by the year 2030. The initiative, spearheaded by the Busoga Consortium for Development (BCD), centers on commercial agriculture, a Village Development Model, and boosting agricultural productivity.

The Busoga Development Agenda (BDA), a long-term transformation plan, outlines ten strategic pillars to combat poverty and underdevelopment. These pillars encompass agriculture, education, youth empowerment, industrialization, infrastructure, technology, and international cooperation. The upcoming five years will prioritize agricultural modernization, value addition, and strengthening international trade partnerships.

BCD plans to establish 12 fully operational model villages across Busoga by 2028, with the goal of lifting over 9,000 households out of poverty through organized and modern agricultural practices. A digital teaching initiative is set to commence this month, connecting at least 50 schools to real-time online lessons. The consortium will also expand its school feeding and soya milk programs to improve student nutrition and academic performance.

Recognizing the region’s challenges, with over 840,000 residents living in extreme poverty according to recent surveys, leaders are urged to integrate government wealth-creation programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) with BCD’s Village Agriculture Model (VAM). VAM is currently being piloted in select villages, with some already seeing investment in soy growing and poultry projects supported by Chinese institutions.

Cooperation with Chinese entities has opened avenues for technology transfer and has already facilitated direct export of Busoga’s dried chilli to China. New leadership for the BCD has been elected, pledging to foster unity and drive the implementation of development programs to reduce poverty across the sub-region.
