Parliament’s Committee on Appointments has embarked on a rigorous vetting process for 81 nominees designated for various ministerial portfolios. The committee, under the leadership of Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth and with the Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa serving as his deputy, has allocated two days for this critical examination.

The process kicked off early Tuesday morning, with several nominees already appearing before the committee. Among those who have undergone scrutiny are Crispus Kiyonga, nominated for 2nd Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament; Frank Tumwebaze, slated for the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries; and Jonard Asiimwe, nominated to oversee Science, Technology, and Innovation in the Office of the President.

The committee’s composition reflects a broad spectrum of the political landscape, including the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, and representatives from across different political parties. This diverse membership ensures a comprehensive review of each nominee.

As a Standing Committee of Parliament, its mandate includes scrutinizing and approving or rejecting nominees put forth by the executive for senior public service, ministerial, and judicial appointments. This vital role is crucial in ensuring the quality and suitability of individuals appointed to key governmental positions.

Updates on the two-day vetting exercise will be shared on Parliament’s official social media channels, including X, Instagram, and TikTok, keeping the public informed. The nominations follow President Yoweri Museveni’s appointment of Cabinet and State Ministers on May 26, 2026.
